A group of producers assisted by the Leite Seridó project participated in the lecture “The technology of intensive forrage cactus cultivation”, given by agronomist Paulo Suassuna, on May 27, during the 50th Agricultural Exhibition in the municipality of Caicó, in Rio Grande do Norte .

The producers' participation was organized by the Insstituto BioSistêmico and by Sebrae/RN, as part of the technical training program of the Leite Seridó Project. The cultivation of forrage cactus will be a theme widely worked on by producers during the course of the project.

“A resistant plant with good adaptability, the forrage cactos is important for feeding the herd. Rich in quality water and energy for the animals, when balanced in the diet, it can efficiently meet the nutritional demands of the dairy herd”, highlights Luiz Sartori, technical coordinator of the IBS livestock projects in the Northeast region.

According to him, these characteristics of forrage cactus are essential for dairy farming in the Seridó region, which has low rainfall and a shortage of forage during the dry season.

“In addition to the technical guidelines for growing the plant, we are going to suggest planting forage cactus in an area of up to 500 m², on each property, with seedlings provided by the project”, he adds.

About the Leite Seridó project

Conceived and executed by the Instituto BioSistêmico, the Leite Seridó project has the support of resources from Fundação Zoetis and Sebrae/RN. The initiative seeks to promote the development of dairy farming on 100 properties, with a family farming profile, in the Seridó region, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the Northeast region of Brazil.

It proposes a set of activities and resources for technological assistance, structured and modulated into four thematic axes aimed at improving the production process: good practices, reproductive management, nutritional management and health management.

The project uses the CheckMilk methodology, which has a platform with a management system and application for technical teams and producers. The system facilitates project management and the application helps the producer on a daily basis, as a support, an extension of the IBS consultancy that can be accessed at any time in the palm of the hand.
